Having something ‘go viral’ is what very many marketers try to do for years. Being the next “it” internet marketer can do wonders for your bottom line and your career. But, as you may know, it’s impossible to predict what becomes viral and what does not. There are, however, guidelines that you can follow to increase your chances of going viral. Some of these guidelines may sound common sense to you, but you can never tell about things – the things that make for ordinary, or extraordinary.
Strive to be different, maybe even unpredictable in your business. If you have a reputation for just one thing, then create something new or enter a new market. If you are known for having a certain ideology, create something that showcases the opposite view. Keep your readers and site viewers on their toes.
If you don’t, then you may become bland and people may take you for granted. You could suffer from income loss from that kind of situation. When you catch people off-guard, or surprise them with something really unique, then your odds of becoming viral increase. This is the very heart of going viral: creating something that people talk about and share.
Throw advertising out the window with this one, though. People can see that one coming from far away. You can safely bet you may never see sales content, or copy, produce a viral effect. True though, your product could become popular, but there are almost always other reasons for that.
It’s best to stay away from heavily promoting a product, instead let others know about your self. Trying to make money is the fastest way to be ignored when your goal is to go viral. Save your sales content for your website and your traditional marketing products and techniques.
One sneaky trick to getting something to go viral is to feign stupidity about a subject.
If that doesn’t appeal to you, then you can always come out and admit to being half an idiot about something. It takes courage to admit to not knowing something, and there’s nothing wrong with asking for help. You will get far more comments on your work if you let your inherent idiocy on a topic be apparent to the people viewing or reading your work. Or, you can default to faking it and then say something totally off-base in your work. You’ll see this done many times by quite a few internet marketers. Just be prepared to live with whatever it is you say.
Viral marketing (or having your work “go viral”) is something that many internet marketers work at over the course of their entire careers. Unfortunately, no one really can predict or know why something goes viral, and something else does not. The only thing to do is keep producing high quality, interesting content and promote it. Eventually people will take notice and your chances of being the next “it” guy (or gal) online will increase dramatically!
